"OLD MAN GLOOM" MURAL PROJECT

What is the "Old Man Gloom Mural Project?"

I have a concept for a mural which I intend to enter into an exhibit later this month in Santa Fe, New Mexico. It will be  a large and detailed piece that will take me an entire week of studio time to complete.

If I am to complete and enter the piece into the show later this month, I first must raise enough money to cover the cost of the mural as well as the framing and transportation. Any amount will help and every supporter will get a personal message painted into the mural.

Each contributor of at least $1 will be given the opportunity to include an anonymous statement in the mural painted by the artist. This is an essential part of the design.
Throoughout the painting of Old Man Gloom,  within the flames and in the air between the observers and the burning effigy, the "cares" and "worries" of the contributors will be painted in the smoke and in the flames.

To understand the meaning and purpose of this,  here's an excerpt from the Wikipedia page on "Old Man Gloom":

"Zozobra , or "Old Man Gloom", is a giant marionette effigy that is built and burned every autumn during Fiestas de Santa Fe in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

He embodies gloom; by burning him, people destroy the worries and troubles of the previous year in the flames.[1] Anyone with an excess of gloom is encouraged to write down the nature of his or her gloom on a slip of paper and leave it in the "gloom box"...At the festival the papers from the gloom box are placed at Zozobra's feet to be burned alongside him."

In addition to having a personal statement added into the painting, there are a few other incentives for contributors:

Every contributor of $5 or more will recieve a 4" x 6" postcard of the completed piece.

Every contributor of $15 or more will recieve a 12" x 18" photo print of the completed piece.

Every contributor of $25 or more will recieve an original painting, 2.5" x 3.5" of Old Man Gloom, painted by Jack Larson, signed on the back.

ABOUT THE ART SHOW:

The show I am entering the mural into is the Will Shuster Zozobra Art Show, showing August 28 through August 30.

Thank you for your support!
